Everything you do is an opportunity to be Love.
We’re gonna say that a lot around here. It’s one of the truths at the[heart]movement.
Doing something with Love doesn’t have to some elaborate, grandiose gesture. The easier you are on yourself, the easier it will be. Castles and temples and palaces weren’t constructed with one enormous block of material. Each brick, each stone, each slab, was purposefully moved into its spot to form the foundation and integrity of the structure.
And, it takes time.
Lots of time.
Start small.
You don’t have to draw up detailed blueprints or devise radical plans on what you’re going to do. Rather, just acknowledge the power of Love inside of you and let it be your guide. It’s there. Whether you think it is or not. You might have to give it a nudge to wake it up, but it’s there. Trust that.
Little steps will still get you where you need to go.
Start holding doors open for people. Let someone with less items in their basket go ahead of you in line. Write a cheque for $10 the next time a charitable group sends you something in the mail.
I can guarantee, the more you open up to the idea that you are Love and act from a source of Love, the more that Love will open up to you.
About 2 years ago, it was suggested to me that, for one week, I do my best to see everything and everyone as an opportunity of Love. All I had to do was remember that idea and put a bit of effort into it. So, I did easy things; I said hi to whoever was in the elevator with me, I looked people directly in their eyes to offer them the most earnest thank you for their help or service to me, I smiled at as many people as I could; especially those less fortunate that I would pass by each morning on my way to work.
As advertised, the more I did it, the easier it became. It didn’t take long before I was thinking less and less and doing more and more. It started feeling second nature; more instinctual. The results were amazing, to say the least. Not only did I feel good about my actions and better about myself, I saw the Love in other people. It wasn’t only me offering these simple gestures to others, but others were offering them to me.
The week, fittingly, culminated in my most important lesson of all. It was the Thursday of my “be Love” week and I was crossing the street behind my building just as a fellow was making his way across the street toward me. He fit the profile of exactly what a hard-nosed downtowner would look like; baggy pants, hat pulled down low, hands shoved in his pockets. And, that’s exactly what I did, I profiled him. I thought that this guy doesn’t want to have anything to do with my “be Love” project or my smile. So, as we crossed paths and exchanged gazes, I became stoic. I was tough. I could be just as tough looking as him.
In that moment, he was my teacher. He showed me that there is Love in everyone and comes in all sorts of packages and appearances by offering me the most sincere, peaceful smile anyone ever could.
In, literally, one split second, this person taught me one of the most valuable lessons I’ve been lucky enough to experience. And, I’m ever grateful for it.
Go out there and try your own “be Love” experiment for a week. Or, a few days, even. See what happens. I’ll have to be honest, though, I’m no longer doing this experiment. I’ve had the results proven to me and now I try to live it every day.
be Love.
